Today we’ll talk about something that can be a pain in the neck for some English students: Prepositions. Lots of people ask us questions about the usage of in, on, about, with, at, etc. We’ve talked a bit about prepositions here. But well, let me tell you guys once again how it goes.

First thing to be considered is simple: never think of a word alone. It’s very hard to figure out what they mean only by observing isolated words. And when it comes to prepositions if you look at combinations, chunks, you may understand everything: pay attention to a word or expression, and then look at the preposition that follows it, so you’ll learn things together.

Look at some of our examples:

Preposition: on

on Monday na segunda-feira

on Tuesday na terça- feira,

on Wednesday na quarta-feira,

on Thursday na quinta-feira

It depends on (you). Depende de (você).

It depends on the weather. Depende do clima.

It depends on the money we will have by then. Depende do dinheiro que vamos ter até lá.

You can count on (me). Você pode contar comigo.

Don’t count on him to help you. Não conte com ele pra te ajudar.

I’m sure I can count on you. Tenho certeza que posso contar com você.

Preposition: in

in the morning de manhã / pela manhã

in the afternoon à tarde

in the evening à noite

in Brazil no Brasil

in Paraná no Paraná

in Curitiba em Curitiba

I’m interested in modern arts. Eu me interesso por Arte Moderna.

He’s only interested in soccer. Ele só se interesso por futebol.

Preposition: about

What are you talking about? Do que você está falando?

We need to talk about that. Precisamos falar sobre isso.

I dreamed about you last night! Sonhei com você ontem à noite!

She dreams about him every night. Ela sonha com ele todas as noites.

We need to think about it before deciding. Precisamos pensar sobre isso antes de decidir.

I was thinking about the movie we watched on Saturday! Eu estava pensando no filme que assistimos no sábado!

She said she thought about it and the answer is no. Ela disse que pensou a respeito e a resposta é não.

Preposition: with

I’m afraid I can’t go with you. Sinto muito mas não posso ir com você.

Do you live with your parents? Você mora com os seus pais?

He was charged with murder and is now doing time. Ele foi acusado de assassinato e está cumprindo pena.

I think she’ll be charged with that crime. Acho que ela vai ser acusada daquele crime.

Preposition: at

We were at school when you called. Estávamos na escola quando você ligou.

Hey, are you at home now? Hey, você está em casa agora?

Stop looking at me like that! Pare de me olhar desse jeito!

Look at that car! Isn’t it awesome? Olha aquele carro! Não é demais?

Look at the teacher, she’s talking to us. Olhe pra professora, ela está falando com a gente.

I’m not going to laugh at your silly jokes. Não vou rir das suas piadinhas bobas.

Why are you laughing at me? Por que você está rindo de mim?

Don’t laugh at him, he’s very sensitive. Não ria dele, ele é muito sensível.

Well, so now, the hint is: Always pay attention to the preposition that follows the word and memorize them together instead of trying to remember the rules to use them. Think of their equivalences in Portuguese.
